- Process C (the body clock): a roughly 24-hour rhythm driven by the suprachiasmatic nucleus, acting like a gate that decides when in the day it's easier to sleep or to stay alert.
What actually determines how sleepy you are right now is the sum of the two. The reason this matters: sleep debt (Process S) and the body clock (Process C) are two independent systems — you can pay down some debt while simultaneously knocking your clock out of alignment. 2. Sleep debt accumulates — and you underestimate it
Many people assume "I skimp on sleep during the week, but I cope, so it's probably fine." That very sense of "I'm okay" is a blind spot the research has flagged.
In a landmark sleep-restriction study (Van Dongen et al., Sleep, 2003, 48 healthy adults), participants were assigned to 4, 6, or 8 hours in bed per night for 14 consecutive days. The result: after two weeks of only 4–6 hours a night, the decline in attention and reaction time was comparable to going 2–3 nights with no sleep at all. And crucially — participants' subjective sleepiness leveled off while their objective performance kept dropping. 4. The real hidden culprit: social jet lag
The term "social jet lag" was coined by chronobiologist Till Roenneberg and colleagues in 2006 (Chronobiology International). Its definition is precise: the gap between the midpoint of your sleep on workdays and on free days.

Here's how it's measured: take your weekday sleep midpoint (say, asleep at 1:00 a.m., up at 7:00 — midpoint 4:00) and your weekend midpoint (asleep at 2:00, up at 11:00 — midpoint 6:30), and subtract. A 2.5-hour gap is like flying 2.5 time zones west every weekend. Research also shows that evening types ("night owls") have the largest social jet lag and the biggest weekday sleep debt — so they catch up hardest and pull their clock furthest out of line.
